Roger Sessions’s influence as a teacher of American composers compares favourably with that of Schoenberg, Hindemith, and Boulanger. In his works he evolved a remarkably compact polyphonic idiom, dissonant yet remarkably lyrical. He won every major award, including a Pulitzer Prize. This CD features a first recording of his Quintet for Strings (1958) and Canons (to the memory of Igor Stravinsky) of 1971.
