Salvatore Messina’s untimely death in 1930 meant that the orchestration of his opera La Beffa a Don Chisciotte remained incomplete. Paolo Pessina assembled scenes and arias from it for this instrumental suite for string orchestra. Nina Rota, best known as a film composer (Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet, Coppola’s The Godfather), is here represented by a concert piece for strings, and Paolo Pessina also conducts his own fusion of the baroque concerto grosso form with the rhythms and sounds of the tango.
