The ‘Eroica’ Symphony is to music what Napoleon, its original dedicatee, was to Europe: an overpowering force! But Beethoven’s genius created new musical foundations that prepared the ground for Romanticism and, later, Expressionism. If in the Third Beethoven scales a titanic peak, in the Eighth his individuality and philosophical depth are equally present, despite its more classical contour.
