The Marienlieder mix sacred and erotic vocabulary, combining the lyrical inwardness and more passionate tones also reflected in the Ave Maria. Unusual for their numerous revisions, the Weihnachtslieder are successful contributions to the Christmas music of Cornelius’s time.
