EAMES, Emma: Complete Victor Recordings 1905-1911

The American soprano Emma Eames (1865–1952) was a famed student (along with Nellie Melba and Emma Calvé) of the legendary Mathilde Marchesi. Eames was a leading star at the Paris Opera, Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera, and her interpretations of Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette and Puccini’s Tosca were highly praised by the composers themselves. Among the highlights in this 2-CD set of Eames’s complete recordings for the Victor Talking Machine Company are arias and duets (with Marcella Sembrich and Emilio de Gogorza) from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro, Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette and Faust, Verdi’s Il Trovatore and Otello, Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana and Puccini’s Tosca. Also featured are Eames’s masterful interpretations of Schubert’s Gretchen am Spinnrade, Massenet’s Elégie and Tosti’s Dopo, as well as American songs by Nevin, Beach and Parker.
