MASON, Edith: Complete Brunswick Recordings 1924-1928
The American soprano Edith Mason (1891–1973) was a member of the Boston Opera before studying with Edmond Clément in Paris. Upon her return to the U.S. in 1915, she made her début at the Metropolitan. After two seasons in New York, where she performed fourteen different rôles, she toured Mexico and Latin America before returning to Paris where she appeared at the Opera and Opéra-Comique. In 1921 Mason became a leading member of the Chicago Opera. In the ensuing years she also sang at La Scala and Covent Garden. Michael Scott once wrote: ‘At the best of times there are comparatively few singers who never make an ugly sound; still fewer of whom it can be said that every note, at least on gramophone records, is a thing of loveliness. In that select company may be numbered the lyric soprano Edith Mason.’ This CD of her complete recordings includes four previously unpublished takes.
