The Spanish soprano Lucrezia Bori (1887–1960) studied in Rome where she made her operatic début in 1908. Four years later she made her New York début at the Metropolitan Opera where she remained until her retirement in 1936. Noted for her delicate, transparent tone and natural expressiveness, Bori was especially admired for her portrayal of vulnerable heroines such as Mimì, Butterfly, Violetta, Manon and Iris. Many of the arias from these rôles are included in this 2-CD set of her complete acoustic and early electric Victor recordings. Also included are selections from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte, Offenbach’s Contes d’Hoffmann, Bizet’s Carmen, Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, Delibes’s Lakmé, Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci and Mascagni’s L’amico Fritz, as well as duets with John McCormack, Beniamino Gigli and Tito Schipa, and a number of delightful Spanish songs.
