GALLI-CURCI, Amelita: Victor Recordings 1930
Amelita Galli-Curci (1882–1063), the leading coloratura soprano at both the Metropolitan and Chicago opera houses, was one the most admired singers of the century. This CD, the final volume in Romophone’s complete survey of the soprano’s recordings features Galli-Curci’s last published discs made for the Victor Company in 1930, the year of her retirement from the Metropolitan Opera. Among the items included are Caro nome and Tacea la notte placida from Verdi’s Rigoletto and I1 trovatore respectively, arias from operas by Gounod, Meyerbeer and Rimsky-Korsakov, and sparkling renditions of Rossini’s La Danza and Delibes’s Les filles des Cadiz. This CD also features all of Galli-Curci’s unissued electrical recordings, such as the ‘Valse’ from Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, Spanish songs, and the Scottish ballad Comin’ thro’ the Rye. Also included is a spoken interview with the soprano from 1963.
