The Parisian-born Frédéric Jean Edmond Clément (1867–1928) studied at the Paris Conservatory with Victor Warot, and made his début at the Opéra-Comique in 1889. He appeared throughout Europe, and also sang at New York’s Metropolitan Opera. This 2-CD set features the tenor’s complete Pathé recordings made between 1916 and 1925, including works by Mascagni, Pessard, Massenet, Delibes, Hahn, Debussy, Weckerlin, Grieg and Schubert. Also featured in this set are the complete recordings of Léon David (1867–1962). Like Clément, David studied with Warot at the Paris Conservatory, and made his début at the Opéra-Comique in 1892. He sung throughout France and Belgium as well as in Monte Carlo, Cairo, Lisbon, Bucharest, Sofia and Istanbul. David’s recordings, made for Fonotipia and Odéon from 1904 to 1908, include arias from Rigoletto, Mignon, Roméo et Juliette, Mignon, Werther and Carmen.
