WILENSKI, O.: Oboe Concerto / 4 Inventions / Wind Quartet (Pascual, Armengol, Camerata Barcelona, Brotons)
The admired Argentinian composer Osias Wilenski, only piano pupil of the legendary virtuoso Simon Barere, has pursued a full and varied life in the arts. His earlier music was marked by experimentalism, but the works here reflect his desire to pursue lyricism and accessibility. A gifted melodist, he imbues each of the pieces with great character and rich sonorities. The Oboe Concerto embodies lyric, sometimes folkloric, and humorous elements whilst Inventions for English Horn and Percussion and the Wind Quartet reveal his exciting rhythmic writing allied to a highly imaginative sense of colour.
