BORI, Lucrezia: Victor Recordings, 1925-37

Lucrezia Bori (1887–1960) was one of the leading sopranos at New York’s Metropolitan Opera for nearly 25 years. Especially renowned for her portrayal of Manon, Violetta, Mimì and Butterfly, Bori’s expressive style conveyed tenderness and restrained pathos. This 2-CD set of her 1925–37 recordings (the second and final volume of Romophone’s comprehensive edition of Bori’s complete Victor recordings) includes selections from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, Massenet’s Manon, Thomas’s Mignon, Offenbach’s Contes d’Hoffmann, Charpentier’s Louise, Verdi’s La traviata, Puccini’s La bohème, Madama Butterfly and La rondine, Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci and De Falla’s La vida breve. Also featured are duets with John McCormack and Lawrence Tibbett, Spanish songs accompanied on the piano by George Copeland, and a number of previously unpublished items.
