MUZIO, Claudia: Complete Pathe Recordings 1917-1918
After joining the Metropolitan Opera in 1916, Claudia Muzio (1889–1936) became the company’s leading soprano and Caruso’s most frequent partner. Her Pathé recordings were made at the height of her career in New York, and include selections from her most well-known rôles, many of which she never recorded again. Among these are Ritorna vincitor and O patria mia (from Verdi’s Aida), Ave Maria (from Verdi’s Otello), Suicidio! (from Ponchielli’s La Gioconda), Depuis le jour (from Charpentier’s Louise), Quando me’n vo (from Puccini’s La Bohème), Ancora un passo and Un bel dì (from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly), In quelle trine morbide (from Puccini’s Manon Lescaut) and O mio babbino caro (from Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi). In addition to the complete Pathé recordings, this 2-CD set includes four previously unpublished titles made for the Edison Company in the early 1920s.
