MERCADANTE: Elena da Feltre
One of the leading composers of Italian opera in the second quarter of the nineteenth century, Mercadante wrote some sixty operas, developing the form in greater freedom with due attention to the drama. The tragedy Elena da Feltre, in 1839, came at the height of his career.
