MAHLER, G.: Symphony No. 9 / Kindertotenlieder (Foster, Bamberg Symphony, Vienna Symphony, Horenstein)
This 1954 recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 was re-released on Vox/Turnabout in 1970. About that re-issue Gramophone, in its March 1971 review, had the following to say: “Vox issued the first LP of (this) work in 1954, with Horenstein conducting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra: at last one could sit down and absorb Mahler’s Ninth at leisure, without interruption… Horenstein’s performance sounded magnificent then, and it still sounds magnificent-a magisterial and intensely emotional interpretation of the old-school type, which has more ferocity and passion than Walter’s…Vox’s recording was always one of the best-extremely clear in detail-and in this reissue…the result is a sound which is surprisingly good for a recording about seventeen years old.”
