The first volume in our edition of Auber’s overtures and incidental music was released in 2019 (8.574005), since when the series has become the principal, indeed the only reference source for much of this excellent but rarely heard repertoire. The curtain-raisers to Auber's once hugely popular operas were championed by conductors such as Arthur Fiedler, Albert Wolff and Paul Paray in the 1940s and 50s, so we're delighted to re-accommodate performances of these lively and characterful works under the commanding direction of Dario Salvi.

Daniel-François-Esprit Auber was one of the most successful opera composers of the 19th century. His overtures were favourites of the light Classical repertoire with gracious melodies and dance rhythms that were hugely influential on the genre of Romantic comic opera, especially in Germany. The unexpected complexities of Le Domino noir result in Auber’s most subtle and refined overture, while the often vivacious and joyful music in Gustave III, ou Le Bal masqué corresponds to the expectations of the grand-opéra tradition. All of these contrast with a closing Marche funèbre composed to accompany the interment of Napoleon’s ashes in the church of Les Invalides.
Dario Salvi is a respected conductor of versatile and eclectic repertoire, ranging from ballet to opera, operetta, musical comedies and symphonic works. He is the recipient of numerous awards and nominations, including the 2023 ‘Riccardo Drigo’ Music for Ballet prize and a 2022 International Classical Music Awards nomination for the world premiere recording of Johann Strauss II’s Waldmeister (8.660489–90). His international status stems from his passion for the rediscovery and presentation of long-forgotten masterpieces and the curation of world premiere performances.
The Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava (JPO) is one of the leading symphonic orchestras of the Czech Republic, with its distinctive sound and progressive repertoire held in the highest esteem by audiences and critics alike. The JPO dates back to the first half of the 20th century and the founding of a radio orchestra in Ostrava, which saw performances with Hindemith, Prokofiev and Stravinsky.
The orchestra has toured extensively across Europe and Asia, performing at such prestigious venues as the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Musikverein Wien and Philharmonie Berlin, among others.
