Ferdinand Ries – Piano Trios

The Naxos catalogue features an excellent series of albums of music by Ferdinand Ries (1784–1838), whose father was piano tutor to Beethoven, who in turn gave Ferdinand lessons on the instrument. We’re delighted to extend our Ries series with this new album of piano trios by Trio Egmont, winners of the First Prize and the Ries Special Prize at the 2021 inaugural Beethoven In His Time competition for chamber music performed on historical instruments.

Ferdinand Ries occupies a remarkable place in the history of music. He was famously a friend and pupil of Beethoven and a virtuoso pianist. His extensive oeuvre opened up the musical aesthetics of Viennese Classicism to Romanticism. Completed in 1826, the Piano Trio in C minor, Op. 143 features two lively, fast movements surrounding a poetic Adagio, reminiscent of the era’s finest opera arias. Very different is the Grand Trio in F minor, WoO 86. It features four thematically interwoven movements that traverse emotions from despair to passion and eventual peace.

‘Susan Kagan’s ongoing Ries series for Naxos is one of that company’s finest-ever endeavours. Kagan’s playing is smart, stylish and, most importantly, she believes in this music. So much is her engagement, one feels that she lives and breathes Ries. Superb.’

‘Grodd and Napoli give performances that I don’t imagine will be surpassed. The two instruments are balanced well on this recording, with a beautiful sound coming from both players. Notes in English and German give plenty of relevant background.’
