Granados – 12 Danzas españolas

The Azulejos Guitar Duo’s new transcription of Enrique Granados’s Danzas españolas, originally written for piano solo, was inspired by the guitar duo arrangements that Miquel Llobet made of two of the Danzas in 1924. They built on this example, incorporating the widened expressive range offered by re-scoring for two guitars, creating a superb new representation of this much-loved classic of the Spanish repertoire.

Azulejos Guitar Duo –
Eugenio Della Chiara • Pietro Locatto

Enrique Granados was one of the leading figures of the late-19th-century Spanish nationalist and impressionist school of musicians. The much-loved Danzas españolas is a collection of piano pieces that represents Granados’s refined blend of Romantic lyricism and Spanish folk imagery. This charming and charismatic journey through Spain is presented here in a colourful transcription for two guitars. Fabio Rizza’s 2024 arrangement of the evocative Capricho español completes the programme.

‘This is a very attractive collection of music, little of which will be familiar to the listener. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Enrique Granados’s birth the three internationally admired volumes of his orchestral discs have been brought together. The set includes one of the greatest pieces in all Spanish music, the Intermezzo from Goyescas, as well as much that is exceptionally rare, such as an impressive symphonic poem.’

‘This is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding piano discs I’ve heard this year. It’s a scandal that much of this music isn’t better known and Naxos must be commended for committing it to disc. More than that, it was canny of them to entrust this project to Riva and Masó, whose playing is as illuminating and idiomatic as one could hope for. Verdict: an essential purchase for all pianophiles.’

‘[A] beautiful sound, warmly recorded and oh my, what splendid music! The rich warm tone of the three guitars is perfectly suited to the vivid colours and sophisticated rhythms of the music. There is little to say other than “go buy this disc and enjoy it.” [I] anxiously await what will come next from this outstanding ensemble.’
