Toccatas and Meditations

This French programme of reflective meditations and rambunctious toccatas for The King of Instruments is brilliantly performed by internationally sought-after organist Dariia Lytvishki, who performs on the Grenzing organ at Bauernkirche Iserlohn in Germany. Built in 2019 and disposed in the French symphonic style, the instrument boasts some 2,300 pipes.

The illustrious French organ tradition is celebrated in this album of toccatas and meditations, including masterpieces drawn from across the repertoire. Charles-Marie Widor was the founding father of the French Organ School, and his Toccata from Symphony No. 5 is a cornerstone of the repertoire. The Méditation by his contemporary Louis Vierne is among the highlights of Romantic organ works. Duruflé, Boëllmann and Guilmant are also represented, as is a beautiful Ravel arrangement. They’re played on the magnificent Grenzing organ at Bauernkirche Iserlohn by Dariia Lytvishko – a Ukrainian-born virtuoso and one of the most lavishly gifted organists of her generation.

‘Tom Winpenny’s playing and interpretations are simply perfection themselves. Previously Elgar’s Organ Sonata No. 1 had never quite cohered for me, but under Winpenny’s fingers it now makes perfect sense and forms an organic unity. Naxos has captured the sweet spot for recording the Father Willis Organ of Hereford Cathedral with richness and clarity … Enthusiastically and urgently recommended!’

‘[T]he whole disc is marked by performing and recording excellence. Organist Iain Quinn plays throughout with a musical authority and technical ease that is wholly convincing. Connoisseurs of fine organs very well-played and beautifully recorded will find much to enjoy and admire on this disc.’

‘Here, finally, is a performance [of Concert Champêtre] that works: the right-sounding instrument, dazzling execution, and excellent sonics. The same holds true for the Organ Concerto, appropriately captured in live performance before a very quiet audience in Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris. In fact, not since the recordings supervised by the composer himself have we had this music rendered with such idiomatic flair.’
