ROSSINI, GIOACHINO
Aureliano in Palmira (Aurelianus in Palmyra)

  • Gioachino Rossini. Dramma serio in two acts. 1813.
  • Libretto by Felice Romani, after Gaetano Sertor’s libretto Zenobia di Palmira, set by Anfossi in 1789.
  • First performance at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, on 26th December 1813.

The Roman Emperor Aurelianus has seized Antioch and taken prisoner, then released, the ambitious Queen Zenobia and her lover, the Persian prince Arsace. Nobly suppressing his own feelings, the Emperor allows the lovers to be united and to live in the pastoral simplicity that the young prince prefers. It is this element that gives rise to the most characteristic music.
