WALLACE: Maritana [Opera] (RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Duinn)

The Irish composer Vincent Wallace’s opera Maritana was among the most popular of the 19th century. It offers a contrast of the Spanish court and the street-singer of the title in a plot that ends happily for all except the unscrupulous harltone Don José. The influence of Meyerbeer is evident, among others, in a score that still has good tunes to recommend it.
