Born in Melbourne, Alfred Hill studied in Leipzig and took back to New Zealand and Australia the German romantic traditions in which he had been trained. As a violinist he played in the Gewandhaus Orchestra and his thirteen symphonies and other orchestral works reflect the influence of Mendelssohn and his Leipzig successors.
