FRANCK: Piano Transcriptions / Violin Sonata / Pastorale
This fascinating disc of piano music brings together three arrangements for the piano of works composed by Franck originally for the organ and for the combination of violin and piano, together with one of his finest works for solo piano, the Prelude, Chorale and Fugue. The two organ works are presented in arrangements by the virtuoso pianist Harold Bauer, who was also an expert violinist. The famous violin sonata, one of the composer’s finest and most popular works, is performed in the transcription prepared by another legendary pianist of the first half of the twentieth century, Alfred Cortot. Not only does this programme present three very rarely heard piano transcriptions, it also allows listeners of today to study how two great pianists of the past viewed the music of this masterly composer of romantic music and, in addition, in comparison with original music for the piano by Franck himself.
