Soler’s passionate interest in music for the stage (he is a prolific composer of operas) has to a large extent conditioned and nourished his output, and his piano music is therefore full of dramatic incident and vivid characterisation. While significantly influenced by Baroque structures generally, and fugue in particular, his piano music is not antiquarian in style, but very much of its time – despite a near obsession with Wagner’s ‘music of the future’.
