LUMBYE: Orchestral Works, Vol. 10
Known as the “Nordic Strauss”, Lumbye wrote in all the popular dance forms of the era, including the lively polka, the more stately polka-mazurka and the galop – which became almost synonymous with his name. Although the Strauss family gained international fame and fortune by writing similar music, Lumbye’s orchestrations have a distinctive, lyrical, almost pristine Copenhagen sound that differs from the Vienna composers’ more hot-blooded orchestral tone. Highlights of this tenth volume of Lumbye’s orchestral works include the colourful and fiery Indian War Dance, which has achieved international fame in the concert hall, the Bouquet Royal Galop, one of the composer’s most popular and most frequently performed dances even to this day, and the divertissement The Irresistible, a superb example of Lumbye’s ability to provide dashing military music for the theatre.
