RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: Maid of Pskov (The) / Fairy Tale
Although chiefly remembered today for his purely orchestral works, of which the most widely performed are Sheherazade, Capriccio espagnol and the Russian Easter Festival Overture, Rimsky-Korsakov was to become almost exclusively an operatic composer. His genius for instrumental colour and beautiful melodies is also evident, however, in the suites from his operas The Maid of Pskov and The Invisible City of Kitezh. Equally evocative is the Fairy Tale (Conte féerique) that takes its inspiration from Pushkin.
