BENDA, F.: Violin Concerto / BENDA, J. A.: Viola Concerto
This second volume of works for stringed instruments and orchestra by members of the Benda family contains works for violin, viola and cello. The Viola Concerto in F major by Jiří Antonín Benda dates from 1775 and is thus quite a late work. František Benda’s Violin Concerto in E flat major was composed slightly earlier, in 1760. Both are elegantly written in three movements and contain much inventive and rewarding music for the solo instruments as well as for the accompanying orchestra. Jiří Antonín Benda’s Klagen is a very late work, dating from 1792. Written in the composer’s seventieth year and here arranged for the cello by Christian Benda, it might be taken to be a musical farewell as his life draws to a close.
