WALTON: Violin Concerto / Cello Concerto
Among the leading composers of his generation, William Walton wrote his Cello Concerto in 1956 in response to a commission from the great cellist Piatigorsky. His Violin Concerto of 1939 was written for Piatigorsky’s colleague Jascha Heifetz. Both works reflect the virtuosity of those who commissioned them, with solo writing set against colourful orchestration. With a blend of the lyrical and the energetic, the two concertos make a worthy addition to the earlier impressive Viola Concerto. This recording forms part of a series devoted to Walton’s major orchestral compositions.
