DOHNÁNYI, E.: Cello Works, Opp. 8, 12 and 32d (Kliegel, Jandó, Nicolaus Esterházy Sinfonia, Halász)
Brilliant pianist, outstanding conductor and distinguished teacher, Ernő Dohnányi had little time to compose, his total opus numbering no more than 48 compositions. He is mostly remembered for one work, the charming Variations on a Nursery Song, part of the standard orchestral repertoire. Though he was writing well into the 20th century, his music continued in the tradition of the great romantic era. His Konzertstück is a full-scale cello concerto, owing inspiration to his father who was a keen cellist, while the Ruralia Hungarica is a nostalgic portrait of Hungarian village life.
