Eric Coates is the name that has carried British Light Music around the world. Many of his marches were used during World War II as signature tunes to long-running radio programmes, and he has become a particular favourite with military bands.

Coates originally studied the viola at the Royal Academy of Music, and for many years held the post of principal viola with London’s major orchestras. He was 33 before he decided to devote his career to composing and conducting. He enjoyed considerable success with London Calling, The Dam Busters March and his suite The Three Elizabeths, although for such a popular composer his catalogue of works is small.
