MARTINU: Works for Cello and Piano, Vol. 1
Martinů may still be less well known than his compatriots Dvořák, Smetana and Janáček, but his output is large and ranges from chamber works to symphonies and operas. This includes some real treasures and much that is attractive and enjoyable. In the course of a life that took him to Paris, America and then back to Europe, he added significantly to the cello repertoire. His three Cello Sonatas represent three phases of his life, dating from 1939, 1941 and 1952 respectively. Here they are coupled with some of his attractive pieces from the early 1930s.
