SOLER, A.: Sonatas for Harpsichord, Vol. 9
A pupil of Domenico Scarlatti, the Catalan composer Antonio Soler spent much of his life as a monk at the Escorial. He won a wide reputation as a theorist, combining mathematical studies with the design of organs. Soler wrote music for the church but is known chiefly for his 150 varied and colourful keyboard sonatas, mostly written for the harpsichord. Highlights of this ninth volume include one of his best-known and most popular works, Sonata No. 84, the charming and lyrical Sonata No. 132, and the unmistakably Spanish Sonata No. 24 with its abundant flow of ideas.
