FERRERO: Nueva España (La)
One of Italy’s leading contemporary composers, Lorenzo Ferrero (b. 1951) has had numerous works performed at major festivals and institutions. Although his predominant interest is the theatre, he has written many instrumental and orchestral works in the so-called neo-Romantic style. Ferrero’s La Nueva España (‘New Spain’), a suite of six symphonic poems, chronicles the Spanish conquest of Mexico in 1521: the years preceding the arrival of the invaders, the massacre of more than twenty thousand people, the Aztecs’ short-lived rebellion and their ultimate destruction. Written between 1991 and 1999, La Nueva España is dedicated to the memory of that ancient human tragedy. This is the first recording of the complete work.
