MENDELSSOHN: Piano Trios Nos. 1 and 2
Mendelssohn’s two piano trios are extremely fine examples both of his musical style in general and of his chamber music in particular. They contain the melodic facility and fluency that endeared Mendelssohn so much to the music lovers of the Victorian era, and have sufficient harmonic and structural originality to stimulate interest without being too challenging. This is music that was rewarding for the many amateur musicians of the mid-nineteenth century to play, and yet still sounds completely satisfying when heard in concert or on disc, as here.
