BARRIOS MANGORÉ, A.: Guitar Music, Vol. 2 (Voorhorst)
Whilst he is now considered by some to be the greatest of all guitarist-composers, it is curious to think that the music of the Paraguayan Agustín Pío Barrios Mangoré fell into neglect for over three decades after his death. The works on this recording include what has undoubtedly become his most popular piece, La Catedral – in which can be heard the composer’s impression of the bells of the Cathedral San José in Montevideo – and the Variations on a Theme of Tárrega, a tribute to an earlier Spanish master of the guitar, and one of Barrios’ most mature compositions, reflecting a lifetime of devotion to and a thorough mastery of the instrument.
