BACH, C.P.E: Sonatas and Rondos
The second son by Johann Sebastian Bach’s first wife, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was a prolific and often original composer by the conservative standards of the times. Admired by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, he developed the style known as empfindsamer Stil (sensitive style), which was remarkable for unconventional and quirky harmonies, emotional intensity and a fine command of melody. With their sudden changes of mood and pace, the Sonatas and Rondos are in many ways more forward-looking than those of Haydn and Mozart. Another selection of C.P.E. Bach’s keyboard music can be heard on Naxos 8.553640.
