GROFE: Death Valley Suite / Hudson River Suite / Hollywood Suite
The three Suites that can be heard on this new recording continue the descriptive style of music that Grofé developed so successfully with his Grand Canyon Suite. In chronological terms the first of the three to be composed was the Hollywood Suite of 1938. This describes, in musical terms, different aspects of the production process for films, from the technicians who make films possible, to the stars and directors. The Hudson River Suite was composed some time later, in 1955. It really is a tribute to New York City and the river on which it was founded, and the irrepressible energy and vitality for which the city is famous. Death Valley Suite appeared in 1957. It looks back to the era of the Wild West and to the days towards the end of this when Grofé himself was starting to build his career.
