GRIFFES: Piano Works, Vol. 2
During his brief life Griffes created a wealth of beautiful music, much of it for the piano. A fine pianist himself, he began writing piano music in his adolescence and continued without interruption until the last weeks of his life. With this landmark recording, the distinguished pianist Michael Lewin completes the first-ever traversal of the complete piano works. The music on this disc traces Griffes’s development from student to master. The Three Fantasy Pieces, Op. 6 are among his best-known works, polished and effective music in his impressionistic style. The Pleasure-Dome of Kubla Khan is heard in its original piano version, a masterpiece of colour with exotic Oriental and Arabic influences. The haunting Three Preludes, written just before his death, are sparse, epigrammatic music of tonal and emotional ambiguity.
