BROUWER, M: Aurolucent Circles / Mandala / Remembrances
Remarkable for its poetic sensibility, Margaret Brouwer’s music also demonstrates craftmanship of the highest order. Aurolucent Circles is a percussion concerto written for the virtuoso Evelyn Glennie, who performs it here. The title was inspired by ‘the spark and lucent sound of so many of the percussion instruments used’. The orchestral work Mandala was partially influenced by the construction of a Tibetan sand painting, and the music echoes the painting’s spiralling, cyclical structure. SIZZLE was written as part of The Fanfares Project, a series of ten orchestral works by women composers. With its use of emphatic and mesmerising rhythms, the work reflects the frenetic pace of twenty-first-century life.
