Cello and Piano Music (Turkish) - SAYGUN, A.A. / MANAV, Ö. / UÇARSU, H. / USMANBAŞ, İ (Tokay, Serdaroğlu)
This disc explores the ways in which Turkish composers have sought to reconcile their own traditions with Western musical heritage. Saygun’s Cello Sonata is representative of his first creative period, blending Anatolian and Western idioms, while İlhan Usmanbaş’ ceaseless aspiration for newer expression via freedom of form has won him international renown. More recently, Özkan Manav has explored folk music using techniques derived from the bağlama, a long-necked lute, and Hasan Uçarsu’s arrangement of an Anatolian folk song uses innovative compositional techniques to represent the sounds, geography and culture of his homeland.
