BAPI DAS BAUL
Bapi Das Baul, son of Purna Das Baul and grandson of the even more famous Nabani Das Baul, is a member of the eighth generation of the talented and famous Baul family from India. In his early childhood, he was taught to sing, dance and play several instruments. At a very young age, he started singing with his father and one of his brothers in the group “Baul Bishwa” which means “the world of Bauls”. Their concerts are invitations to discover their world, the world of ancient wandering minstrels from Bengal who believe in simplicity in life and love. This philosophy is strongly reflected in their songs, which are all about love and joy. These cultural roots have always been and always will be very important to him. In other words, he remains faithful to his traditions, which are also present in his music. He also uses traditional instruments on stage.
On the other hand, he is always seeking new things. For instance, he started working on rhythm and a new way of singing. His music has taken him around the world, and in Europe he has worked with many great artists such as Asian Dub Foundation, Transglobal Underground, Fun-Da-Mental, Natacha Atlas, Zap Mama, Elisa Wout among many others. Even Madonna was intrigued by his talent and invited him in 2001 to record something together. Through these experiences he discovered different kinds of music and musical instruments.
Driven by both a desire for renewal and his concern to keep his traditions alive, he combined these different styles, particularly with his band Senses, which he founded in 1999 to unite Indian and western music.
Meanwhile, he continues working with Baul Bishwa and, since 1992, has been the leader of this project, which is appreciated by a public which recognizes in Bapi a new generation, proud to perpetuate this living tradition. His music attracts audiences of all ages worldwide.
