Internationally-known CONTINUUM, directed by Cheryl Seltzer and Joel Sachs, created a unique role in musical life through its pioneering retrospectives—135 different concerts in New York City from 1967 to 2011, focusing on individual masters of the past 100 years and on major themes. It has been acclaimed for its explorations from a global perspective and its role in introducing little-known, exceptional composers to U.S. audiences. Continuum has also presented concerts and mini-residencies for decades at colleges, universities, for music societies, and in other contexts throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, performed at major international festivals and toured frequently in Europe, the former Soviet Union, South America, Mexico, and Central and Eastern Asia. All these activities earned the group the Siemens international award for distinguished service to music and four ASCAP-Chamber Music America Awards for Adventuresome Programming. Its many recordings include 9 portrait recordings for Musical Heritage Society, re-released on Naxos, of American masters Henry Cowell (2 volumes), Robert Erickson, Charles Ives, Leon Kirchner, Conlon Nancarrow, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Roberto Sierra, and Virgil Thomson. Other Continuum recordings include “Turner – Recent Chamber Music of Roberto Sierra” (New Albion); Tania León’s Singin’ Sepia (Bridge) and Canto (Mutable Music); and portrait recordings of Leonid Hrabovsky and Valentin Bibik (TroppeNote/Cambria). Other recordings have appeared on Nonesuch, CRI, and Capstone. Forthcoming on Naxos are Continuum’s third recording of Roberto Sierra and a CD of Ursula Mamlok’s music. Continuum also has recorded for nationwide American radio broadcast, for stations in the UK, Germany, France, and Slovakia, and has made films for CBS-TV and the educational network.
