Founded in 1948, the Orquesta Sinfónica UNCuyo (Mendoza, Argentina) is considered to be one of South America’s preeminent orchestral ensembles. The Orquesta Sinfónica UNCuyo’s six decade tradition has been defined by its music directors Julio Perceval, Olgerts Bistevins, Jean Constantinesco, Alejandro Derevitzky, Aquiles Romani, Juan Carlos Zorzi, Julio Malaval, Jorge Fontenla, Armando Krieger, Guillermo Scarabino, David del Pino Klinge, Ligia Amadio, and since 2005 David Handel. Many of the world’s most recognized artists have performed with the Orquesta Sinfónica UNCuyo, including Paul Hindemith, Schlomo Mintz, Peter Donohoe, Desiree Defauw, Víctor Tevah, Charles Dutoit, Lior Shambadal, Julio Karr-Bertoli, Eduardo Marturet, Andrés Segovia, Ida Haendel, Henrik Szering, Antonio Yepes, Pierre Fournier, Jorg Demus, Gyorg Sandor, Zvi Zeittin, José Iturbi, Abbey Simon, Phillipe Entremont, Byron Janis, Ruggiero Ricci, Friedrich Gulda, Ralph Votapek, Franco Guilli, Bruno Gelber, Martha Argerich, Barry Douglas, to mention only a few. Currently, the Orquesta Sinfónica UNCuyo is in an expansion phase and is positioned to become an international reference with respect to artistic excellence and community outreach. The Universidad Nacional de Cuyo is currently in the process of developing the newest state-of-the-art cultural complex in the region and future home of the Orquesta Sinfónica UNCuyo. The Orchestra has recorded widely for South American radio broadcasts and commercial recordings within Argentina. This Naxos recording of music by David Winkler represents the Orquesta Sinfónica UNCuyo’s first recording for international distribution.
