Elke Martha Umbach studied recorder at the Music Academy in Detmold and Münster. In 1984, still studying in Münster, she began to study the baroque flute with Prof. Konrad Hünteler and later renaissance traverso at the Academy of Early Music in Bremen with Nancy Hadden. She took part in various master-classes for example with Barthold Kuijken, Han Tol, Walter van Hauwe and Michael Schneider.

In 1992 she founded the ensemble “Umbach & Consorten”. Her main object is to discover the often unknown flute-music of the 16th to 19th century in various casting, especially for voice and obligate flute, using also dramatic and historical dance elements. For example Umbach & Consorten produced an historical dance and music project for the Shakespeare Company in Bremen; a music-spectacle about Johann Adolf Hasse together with Theatre KontraPunkt, Düsseldorf for the Festival of Early Music in Innsbruck. More and more the ensemble is invited to play at big festivals like Beethoven Halle Bonn, Early Music Festival Innsbruck, International Händel Festival Göttingen, Händelhaus Halle, Tonhalle Düsseldorf.

With a special interest Elke Martha Umbach makes research on the chamber music works by Johann Adolf Hasse in co-operation with the Hasse Archiv in Hamburg. Basing on these researches she published two CD – one in 1998 with cantatas with obligate instruments by Hasse, Händel and Scarlatti (Aeolus) and the other in 1999 with solo - and trio sonatas by Johann Adolf Hasse (Aeolus). In 2001 she was invited to play the solo flute in a CD production “Telemann Concerto” with the Kölner Kammerorchester, conducted by Helmut Müller-Brühl (Naxos).

Right now Elke Martha Umbach is doing research on female composers of renaissance, baroque and classical era. She presents her results in a CD- and concert-series, starting with a CD about the chamber work compositions of Anna Bon di Venezia which will be presented in 2002 by Aoelus.

Concert tours with different ensembles and orchestras for early and contemporary music have taken her throughout Germany, Austria, France, Hungary and the USA.
