Founded and directed by Pierpaolo Maurizzi, the Überbrettl Ensemble originally came into being in 1998 for a performance of Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire directed by Peter Stein at the Festival di Palermo sul Novecento (Palermo’s 20th-century festival). Since then it has been invited to perform at many festivals both in Italy and abroad, including the Wiener Festwochen, Ravenna Festival, Brescia and Bergamo Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Piano Festival, Bologna Festival, the Monteverdi Festival in Cremona, the Festival delle Nazioni in Citta di Castello, Ruhrfestspiele in Recklinghausen, Porto’s PoNTI Festival, Festwochen Gmunden, Guanajuato’s Festival Internacional Cervantino and the Festival Internacional de Música de Galicia in Santiago de Compostela.
The ensemble varies in size, from piano trio to chamber orchestra, and its repertoire ranges from Classical to contemporary music. It frequently performs repertoire by Bartók, Berg, Berio, Brahms, Hindemith, Messiaen, Mozart, Prokofiev, Ravel, Schoenberg, Schreker, Schubert and Shostakovich. The ensemble makes a deliberate effort to feature young talents alongside its more established musicians.
