After studying school and church music, and the organ, at the Musikhochschule in Mainz, Mannheim and Saarbrücken, Hans-Jürgen Kaiser was appointed organist at the cathedral in Fulda in 1989. He is also responsible for the organ in the diocese of Fulda and artistic director of organ concerts and recitals in the cathedral. Since 1990 and from 1995 in his capacity as professor he has taught the organ and improvisation at the Mainz Johannes Gutenberg University. After initial intensive work with French and German romantic organ repertoire, Bach and Messiaen, he has extended his study of early music, with a special interest in early organ-building. Improvisation is also an important element in his concert programmes, in styles both historical and contemporary. His recordings include the music of Liszt, Reger, Bach and Eben, and performances on important instruments including those of the cathedrals of Schwerin, Fritzlar and Fulda, with concerts in Germany and abroad and courses in improvisation. In 2004 he was elected chairman of the conference of leaders of training in Catholic church music in Germany and is one of the principal editors of the new standard German ecumenical work on church music, Basiswissen Kirchenmusik, which first appeared in 2009.
