Justo Sanz was born in Pontevedra, Spain. He specialises in historical interpretation of music on original instruments, and also has a great passion for the dissemination of contemporary music. He studied clarinet and recorder at the Madrid Royal Conservatory under Peñarrocha Vicente and Mariano Martin, and for two years was a student of international concert clarinettist Eric Hoeprich at the Koninjklijk Conservatorium in The Hague (Netherlands), where he graduated in Historical Clarinet. Justo Sanz also holds a law degree from the University of Salamanca and a Diploma in Musical Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid. Since 1989 he has been Professor of Clarinet at Madrid Royal Conservatory, and he has been artistic director of the prestigious Julian Menendez Clarinet Course since its inception in 2005. He is President of the Spanish Association for the Study and Development of the clarinet (ADEC), and since 1992 has held the position of clarinet soloist with the Madrid Orquesta de la Comunidad.

In his long career he has performed all over the world, including representing Spain at the 2004 Clarinetissimo Festival (Brussels), Clarimania 2011 (Poland) and at the 2005, 2007 and 2009 ClarinetFests. Justo Sanz has given many première performances, including Freia by Karlheinz Stockhausen (2002) and Jean Françaix’s Clarinet Concerto (2007). He is director of HISPANA RES, which specialises in historical performance and is a founding member of MAD4clarinets.
