Myung-Whun Chung began his musical career as a pianist. After studying at the Mannes and The Juilliard schools in New York, he was appointed Carlo Maria Giulini’s assistant at the Los Angeles Philharmonic and became associate conductor two years later. He has since conducted virtually all the world’s leading orchestras, and has served as music director of the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and the Opéra de Paris-Bastille, principal conductor of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, honorary conductor laureate of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and principal guest conductor of the Teatro Comunale di Firenze and the Staatskapelle Dresden—the first conductor to hold the post in the history of the orchestra.

Many of his numerous recordings have won international awards, and Chung himself has been the recipient of many prizes. He has also devoted an important part of his life to humanitarian and ecological causes, and currently serves as Honorary Cultural Ambassador for Korea, the first in the Korean government’s history. In 2008, he was the first conductor named as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
