Principal Conductor: Christoph König

The Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto – Casa da Música works regularly with well-known conductors and soloists, as well as with some of the foremost contemporary composers, from Emmanuel Nunes to Magnus Lindberg, Jonathan Harvey, Kaija Saariaho and Pascal Dusapin. Apart from performing over fifty concerts a year at the Casa da Música, it is increasingly seen outside Porto, with visits in recent seasons to Vienna, Strasbourg, Luxembourg, Antwerp, Rotterdam and Brazil, and again to Santiago de Compostela and Lisbon. Together with its commitment to core classical and contemporary repertoire, the activities of the orchestra include jazz, fado or hip-hop and playing for films, as well as concerts involving presenters. It also has a commitment to educational activities and workshops for young composers as well as conductors’ masterclasses led by Jorma Panula. In the 2010 and 2011 seasons the orchestra performed all Mahler’s symphonies and in 2012 gave several world premières, including the Concerto for two pianos by Bruno Mantovani, performed in Porto and at the Musica festival in Strasbourg. The origins of the orchestra date back to 1947, when the Orquestra Sinfónica do Conservatório de Música do Porto was formed, later performing under different names. It has 94 permanent members, which enables it to perform the entire symphonic repertoire from the classical period to the 21st century. The orchestra has been part of Fundação Casa da Música since July 2006.
