SOUTHERN ARIZONA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra (SASO) was founded and is operated by community musicians. Since 1979, this orchestra has brought together student, amateur and professional musicians with exceptional soloists, composers and conductors.
SASO’s concerts routinely mingle standard-repertory works with new or neglected music, including many world premières, with a particular emphasis on Arizona composers.
The orchestra has toured China twice, and appeared at the 2016 Gramado in Concert International Music Festival in Brazil, where it premièred Max Wolpert’s Viola Concerto No. 1 ‘Giants’ and also performed Amanda Harberg’s Viola Concerto, both with soloist Brett Deubner and conductor Linus Lerner.
Since 2013 SASO has also served as the guest pit orchestra for two opera festivals in Mexico: the Oaxaca Opera Festival and the San Luis Opera Festival in San Luis Potosí. At home, the orchestra has performed concertante works with soloists ranging from violist Hong-Mei Xiao and flutist Carol Wincenc to players of the electric guitar, Chinese guzheng and agave flute.
