With a reputation for light-hearted music of wit and elegance, Poulenc later developed a maturer idiom that led to liturgical works expressing his rediscovered religious convictions. However, it is in his songs and chamber music that he is most characteristically represented. The Sonatas for flute and clarinet are his most frequently performed chamber works, the bittersweet melodies making them immediately attractive. His Sextet for piano and wind instruments and the smaller-scale Trio, are sprinkled with Poulenc’s wit and ready sense of fun.
‘Alexandre Tharaud plays Poulenc’s piano parts with great flair, wit, and a true feeling for the music’s manic shifts from raucous high spirits to nostalgia and melancholy.’
